Hutong Sihefang Chinese Restaurant (2009-06-08)
KL and I are suckers for Cantonese BBQ. Every time we go to Hong Kong, we gorge on roast goose, roast duck, charsui, roast pork, suckling pig, and even steamed chicken from BBQ restaurants. A roast duck in Tokyo sells for US$80-$100 (outrageous!), that's why we don't find ourselves in the few selected Chinese restaurants that have them on their menu here.
Stumbled upon Hutong Sihefang, a Peking Duck and Beijing cuisine
restaurant, that sells half a Peking duck or Cantonese roast duck for
the incredible price of only 2800Yen/US$28!! WHAT THE?! Is
that a typo on their signboard? To find out, we headed straight
to the crime scene.
We arrived around midday and was shown two sheets of "lunch
menu". The normal menu which includes the half duck is only
available for dinner. I said to the waiter we really just wanted
to have their "Half Cantonese Duck", in my usual imploring tone.
He then said they could do it for us! But for reason unknown to
both KL and I, we left the restaurant and decided to go back at dinner
time. Walking toward the subway station, we changed our minds and
returned to the restaurant and totally surprised the waiter!
We ordered a spicy beef fried rice and the half duck. The rice
was so-so and not terribly spicy. The much-awaited "Half Duck"
arrived Peking Duck style!! There was the usual julienne cucumber
and leek, hoisin sauce and crepe that came with 8 SLICES OF DUCK
BREAST. We were utterly disappointed. /_\
What the menu says is so misleading! When they say "Cantonese
style", they really just mean more meaty duck instead of skin only in
the Peking style. And "Half Duck" is crazy deceitful! Where
is the leg, the thigh, or the rest of the breast?! The dish costs
2800Yen/US$28 with four crepes, which means a whopping 7 bucks for one
crepe with two slices of duck.
Granted, the skin of the duck was pretty crispy, but it's very
expensive and so not what we had in mind from reading their menu.
The service was nice and all, but we don't want to return.
