Earthquake Aftermath (2011-03-16)

Seeing the pictures of devastation brought on by the quake and tusnami is just heart-wrenching.  So many lives lost, properties damaged, residents displaced... SIGH   T_T

And then there's this big problem at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, it just seems like we can't catch a break!

Update: Japan upped the magnitude of the earthquake from 8.8 to 9.0

Update: In Japan, the worst of times brings out the best of people. Many private companies and organizations, out of their own initiatives, are donating lots of essential supplies to refugees and evacuees such as blankets and food.

Update: Although the scheduled power outages affect only a small number of suburbs in central Tokyo (ours is luckily spared so far), heeding the plead from the government to conserve energy, we have been using just the foyer bulb for lighting the living room and not turning on the heaters since Saturday. Night time is especially tough as temperature plunges; to keep warm in bed, I put on socks, two pairs of pants (one a long john), layers of top AND A CURLED-UP EFOO RIGHT NEXT TO ME UNDER THE BLANKET. Finally he's proven himself to be useful!

Update: Food hoarding in Tokyo is mystifying to me. Among the popular items people sweep off supermarket shelves are toilet paper, instant ramen, bread, banana, eggs, milk and rice. If they are preparing themselves for another giant quake, (thus evacuation), what are they gonna do with all the perishable food especially a 10-lb bag of raw rice and a packet of 12-roll toilet paper?? It's not like Tokyo is cut off from any food supply line from the outside world, why are people hoarding food?! (This happened long before the radiation threat and possible widened power cuts in Tokyo)

Update: The nuclear crisis in Fukushima is NOT the same as Chernobyl. Of the many articles I read, the one by William Tucker of the Wall Street Journal is the most succinct and easy to understand. (google William Tucker Japan Does Not Face Another Chernobyl) KL says "Total ignorance is bliss, partial ignorance is dangerous."
