More Memorable Meals (2006-01-30)
Of all the meals we had in Hong Kong, only one was rated so-so, the rest was superb. Perhaps KL and I are just not harsh critics when it comes to food, I seldom find Hong Kong's Chinese food taste bad unless the dish involves ingredients I loathe such as cream or oysters. But then again, I haven't really had a lot of experience eating out in Hong Kong, but all the time I did, I had fantastic food. The so-so food we had was at a diner-type restaurant in
Mongkok. We often saw personal size clay pot rice cooking outside
that restaurant on the sidewalk and finally decided to give it a
try.
Our rice arrived 10 minutes after we placed the order so I knew the
rice was already cooked, they must have taken the ten minutes to cook
the topping. My spare rib rice was good, so was KL's frog
rice. Yes, FROG rice. You could see little pieces of frog
legs and frog spine on the rice. I tried a piece and the meat was
sweet and tender which tasted like spring chicken. The problem
with the dish was there's a thick layer of very burnt rice on the
bottom of the pot which was totally inedible and bitter.
The other meals we had was excellent. The salt-baked chicken
from the well-known Hakka restaurant, Chuen Cheung Kui, was simply
beautiful. They have set dinner for two, four and six. The
serving was huge and the price reasonable. That will be the
restaurant we return for our first meal next time we go to Hong Kong.
The Chinese BBQ we had at Guang Dong Restaurant and Hang Heung's
Kitchen was worth every cent. The goose meat was moist and its
skin fragrant. Both had superb suckling pig, but Hang Heung's
slightly fatty.
