Flexible Keyboards (2004-12-02)
I am one of those people who are accident-prone. I trip on the streets, get trapped in revolving doors, and bump into things; I even fell down on the staircase in our apartment once. I don't think I can be that careless, but somehow accidents follow me all my life. Just last month I fell off my bike and slammed my face on the ground. It gave me big bruises and a scratched nose which took over two weeks to heal. I admit that accident was caused by my carelessness because I rode the bike forgetting to put the kickstand up, one turn and I was down flat. This accident-prone nature of me seems to spawn mishap that
fortunately does not cause bodily harm but is unfortunately costly
. I mean I break or destroy things often. I dropped my
brand new digital camera just two days after I bought it. And
last week I spilled a glass full of water on my keyboard rendering it
useless in less than an hour.
And this is why I write about flexible keyboards today. I saw
these weird keyboards when we were out looking for one to replace mine
in Bic Camera in Shinjuku (
). They are light-weight and very soft,
but look a bit flimsy. KL said sarcastically that's what I need,
an unbreakable and water-proof keyboard. We didn't find one at
the end and went to Akihabara (
) to continue the search.
Akihabara was busy as usual and we found exactly what we wanted in a shop we didn't think of going inside to look at first. The shop, Akibao, is not a computer store, it sells anything from cutlery to electric shavers and a whole lot of other gizmos. I just happened to glance from the corner of my eye a few keyboards in plain cardboards stacked haphazardly on a shelf amongst other things such as alarm clocks and picture frames. They were exactly the ones we've been looking for and the cheapest we saw. Score!
KL went back to Bic Camera the next day to get a 19-inch monitor
while they were on sale and also picked up the same keyboard in Akibao
afterwards. The monitor was delivered to us Tuesday and it ends
up on my desk because KL says I will be using the computer/monitor more
during the day. It's his idea of "maximising the usage of
things". I'm trying very hard to maximise it more by not breaking
it, it is not as easy as you think.
