Transportation in Hong Kong (2004-05-23)
Transportation in Hong Kong is efficient, easily accessible and cheap. Trains are clean and fast but cost the most. I like riding on double-deck buses because they give me a view. They have TV screens on both decks that entertain passengers with infomercials and Cantopop music videos. Buses are very cheap costing about US 50 cents and many bus drivers are women. To really get your money's worth, nothing beats the Star
ferry. For a mere US 30 cents, you get a spectacular view
crossing the Victoria Harbour. All it takes is a few minutes to
go from Kowloon to Hong Kong side. I prefer the ferry to the MTR
subway any day.
Minibuses are 16-seat vans. They are usually dirty and
old. Drivers tend to drive them like race cars zipping through
traffic and turning corners in a mad dash. If you're in a hurry,
they'll get you to your destination in no time.
Taxis are ubiquitous in Hong Kong. You never have to wait too
long for one. Cab drivers like to sit on a mat made of wooden
beads on their seats, another unique feature of Hong Kong people.
