Thank-you Gift (2009-08-04)

You don't realize how big thank-you gifting is in Japanese culture until you live here and experience it yourself.  Besides the usual Ochugen, Oseibo (gift-giving at the end of the year), big wedding favors, and gift-giving to those who send you gifts, I just found out I could now add one more to the list.

Three months after Ishida-san died, I received another thank-you gift (besides the giftbox and the fruit I already received at the funeral) from his wife for attending his funeral.  This gift is the best because I was given a catalogue from which I could pick one item, fill out a postcard-ish order form and the gift will be delivered to me on the date of my choice.  Woooo!

The variety of merchandise is wide which ranges from fruit and meat to household items and restaurant vouchers.  I think all gifts should be like this in the world: send the receiver a catalogue and let them pick their favorite gift in the comfort of their own home.  How great is that?
