Golden Week (2004-04-30)
Yesterday marked the beginning of a week-long holiday called The Golden Week. 29th was Green Day, 3rd is Constitution Day, 4th is Rest Day and 5th is Children's Day. A number of small shops, doctors' offices, banks etc will be closed during those days. Many office workers will take today off to give themselves a full week off. And the number one activity that many Japanese choose to do during any holiday break is to travel. There will be a massive number of people traveling overseas as well as inter-prefecture this week.KL has to work through the holiday and I don't mind a bit.
It's not like we have travel plans for this time of the year and he
gets time off later anyway. We would be crazy to want to battle
with millions of other people over transportation or wait in long lines
for everything from tickets to restrooms. Price gouging by travel
agencies during this time is bad too. One may have to pay as much
as three times the normal price for the same travel package taken in
low season. I think I'll just stay home this week and plan for
our next overseas trip which will be taken at a time when most other
people will be working and airfares are low. We'll make
that OUR Golden Week.
