Ridiculously Expensive Grapes (2011-10-02)

The first box of Ruby Roman this season fetched a whopping 500,000Yen (US$6500)!!!

They can be found sold in bunches

in Mitsukoshi department store in Nihonbashi

Each BUNCH is priced from 30,000Yen to 100,000Yen (US$410 to $1365)!!!

How do we, the plebeians, afford such outrageous prices? Ah, don't worry, there's single grape for sale at just US$13.7 EACH

Each grape sits in its own cushion and box

About the size of a ping pong ball

Ruby Roman grapes are only grown in a small town near Toyama Prefecture in western Japan

This is the man

who grows them

Only about 30 bunches are harvested daily while in season

Each individual bunch is checked for sweetness

and must register over 18 before it goes to the market

Big plump grapes

Compare them to Kyohou grapes

much bigger
