Day 2 National Palace Museum, Dansui, Shihlin Night Market (2005-04-17)

Big gates and steps leading to the National Palace Museum

My lunch, all this food including dessert costs $5.5

KL's lunch set, same price

Tickets for the museum, about $3 each

Renovation for the museum is taking place

Amazing art work carved from wood

A piece of brown color jade carved to look like a chunk of belly pork

One of the most famous pieces of art work in the museum is this cabbage carved from a single piece of jade that happens to have a white and green color

Side by side

KL took some pain killers for his headache with the water from this free water machine in the museum

Chih-shan Garden entrance, admission $0.3

Found this little piggy tied to the rail at the ticket gates just inside the garden

Chinese style corridors and a small stream in the garden

A staff cleans up fallen leaves in the koi pond

Feeding koi is popular among the locals

Koi feed vending machine, 30 cents a pack of feed

Just as we came out of the garden, we heard the pig squeal. We followed its cry and saw his owner dragging and pulling him into the car

A main street near Dansui River, it's full of food stores and snack shops

This blind performer captures his audience with the flute which he plays beautifully. People continuously put money into the box in front of him. We were so impressed by his talent and courage that we tipped him well

"Iron eggs" and "Iron quail eggs"

The first hawker we patronized in Dansui

We bought deep-fried squid balls from the two ladies, the squidballs were a little fishy in taste

A very well-known shop that sells fishballs. Just mention its name ( Kakao Yui Wan) to any local shop owners and they'll be able to direct you there

Famous Kakao fishballs. The taste is good but not as crunchy as those in Malaysia or Hong Kong

The shop that sells its very famous shrimp rolls (just down a few shops from the fish ball shop), notice the long line of customers

Once you get your shrimp roll, you slap on any sauce you like in one of the containers. I prefer the garlic soy sauce to the sweet chili sauce

We waited 15 minutes for this stick of shrimp rolls. The deep-fried rolls had a crispy outside and savory filling, they were good, but not great. I don't understand what the fuss is all about

A very famous iron egg shop not far from the fishball shop

Dansui River

The sunset we came to Dansui to see. It was there for 10 seconds before being swallowed by thick clouds

One of the many hawker food one should try: grilled sausages. We bought a stick from this hawker and it was very good

One of the streets in Shihlin market that is lined with endless boutiques

The hawker food center in Shihlin night market right next to the train station

Stalls upon stalls inside the hawker center

The hawker center is crowded with people looking for a bite to eat

We had stir-fried vermicelli and oyster omelet, two very local dishes. The vermicelli is okay, but we hated the omelet. The cook must have added sticky rice flour in the batter, the omelet came out very thick and chewy. We are not big fans of CHEWY omelet

Had dessert at this tofu stall

Delicious soft tofu in ginger syrup, and a sweet snack I bought at another stall which tasted badly
