Shutters (2010-07-20)
Shutters is a pretty well-known restaurant with rather good review. It was particularly recommended by Shizuka Arakawa, the 2006 Figure Skating Olympic Champion. The signature dish of Shutters is spare ribs made the Japanese
way. No BBQ sauce or smoked flavor, theirs come in
soy, salt & pepper, garlic, mustard, ketchup, mayo, wasabi, and
basil.
The ribs are made famous for their melt-in-the-mouth tenderness and
just about every single table would order ribs.
The appetizer and salad we ordered were VERY over-seasoned. I
can eat pretty salty savory food, but the marinated mushrooms and salad
with the soy based dressing were simply too too salty. Good thing
they kept our water glasses filled quickly and constantly!
Now the ribs. To truly taste the flavor of the ribs, we
ordered a Half & Half Plate of simple Salt & Pepper and
Mustard. KL's reaction to his first bite was "No joking, this
tastes like pork that's been boiled for hours in Chinese long
soup!" In other words, it's pretty tasteless but tender. I
took a bite and I had to agree.
The mustard ribs were essentially the same thing but with mustard
smeared on top. They tasted to me like they've been
boiled for a
long time, then reheated by either grilling or roasting. Why
do diners think so highly of such a poorly-prepared and flavorless
dish??
Our plate was also verging on being a rip-off as the mustard ribs
weren't quite qualified as ribs, but "nubbins" of bones with some meat
attached.
I only have two words for Shutters: Overrated. Overpriced.
