Bicycle Theft Registration (2004-09-19)
The government encourages bicycle owners to register their bikes against theft, a program run by the local council so that in case your bicycle is stolen and found later, it can be returned to you. I went to our neighborhood bike shop to get this registration done the other day. The shop owner is a very friendly middle-aged man. He filled out all the forms for me after I showed him my ID card and bike warranty. The process only took fifteen minutes and 500 Yen (about US$5). Even though I seriously doubt my bike will ever be found if it's stolen, it makes me feel better I 've done all I can to protect it from theft.
