Our Backyard BBQ (2005-02-11)

There is no question that we like BBQ food, especially barbecued chicken wings and ribs.  However I don't do it as often as I should because it is a lot more hassle setting up the grill here than the Weber we had in Sydney.  Last weekend, I finally overcame my laziness and dug out our incredibly small drum-like grill from the closet and cooked some ribs.  Before I put the charcoal in the grill, I burned it directly over our portable stove to speed up the heating process.  Once the charcoal was hot enough, I transferred the pieces to the grill and started cooking.  One of the things that  makes barbecuing in our balcony a hassle is the fact that there is no room to sit or stand in the balcony to tend to the food on the grill.  So every time I need to baste or turn the food, I have to keep opening and closing the glass sliding door so the smoke can't come into the apartment.

Fortunately the delicious flavor of smoked and char-grilled food compensates for the hard work put into barbecuing.  I even made my own BBQ sauce with grated onion, garlic, ketchup, vinegar, honey and spices to smother the meaty ribs.  I am sure whoever walked past our apartment could smell the aroma and drooled!  The ribs tasted so darned good!  And the wings I cooked on the grill were so moist they popped in our mouths bursting juice.

We thoroughly enjoyed the meal.  Even though it was a lot of trouble barbecuing in our teeny balcony, the result is well worth it.  I should really do it more often.
