Decks Building In Odaiba (2005-04-25)

Decks building in Odaiba (kanji) has two distinctive shopping areas to attract customers.  The first is "Itchome Shopping Street" on the first floor that is decorated like old-time Tokyo.  All the shops have a retro feel displaying old-fashioned signs and dated design.  Even the lift area is made to resemble a waiting area of a train station of the Showa period (1950's?).  Even if you don't plan to do any shopping, it's quite fun to just browse the shops and have a taste of what an old Tokyo shopping street looks like.

Crossing over to the adjacent building via a short bridge, you'll find "Small Hong Kong" on the fifth floor.  There are many Chinese restaurants and Oriental shops there.  The decor of the floor is made to look like a busy Hong Kong district.  Bright neon shop signs jutting high up from the walls will make you think you are standing in the middle of the well-known shopping paradise.

If you can stand the stodgy Chinese opera-like music playing insipidly in the background, you will have no trouble browsing in Small Hong Kong.  And if you can really stand the simulated ear-popping sound of a passing plane every fifteen minutes-- supposedly the noise you would hear in Kowloon City from the old Hong Kong KaiTak Airport-- you might actually enjoy shopping there.
