Cosplay (2005-10-04)
Sometimes you can see a large number of young people dressed in costumes gather in the area outside Mejijingu Shrine on the side of Harajuku. The Japanese term for such dressing up is called Cosplay which is short for Costume Play. These people are dead serious about their gig. They go to
great length to dress themselves in the perfect costume and apply
heavy makeup to match their outfits. Although dressing up as
maids is popular, there is usually a variety of costumes on display.
People who dress as Dracular often paint their entire face white,
line their eyes dark in an evil way and even put fangs on their
teeth. For the past years, I've seen princesses, Morticia Addams,
and different kinds of maids roam the streets of Harajuku and
Shibuya (
). Why do these people feel such a need to show themselves
in outlandish costumes and kooky makeup in the public is beyond me.
Tokyo is never short of funny people engaging in funny business.
