Cafeteria In Tokyo University (2005-12-17)
There are several cafeterias in Tokyo University, all differ in size and the biggest one located under the clock tower is rumored to have the best-tasting food. I've only been to a smaller one years ago and can't remember what I had, so I can't tell you if the taste rumor is true or not. But I did go to the bigger one recently and I had a quite delicious bowl of ramen called Akamonmen (Red Gate Noodles), that I can tell you.The hour my friends and I spent in the cafeteria, we saw no fewer
than a dozen customers joining our long table with the same ramen on
their trays. It must be very popular among students and faculty.
The noodles are not submerged in soup like the ones you get in ramen
shops, they are completely covered with a generous amount of thick and
spicy meat sauce. And the whole thing only costs 360 yen (US$3.5)!
Since the cafeterias are not just open to students and staff, I saw quite a few "outsiders" like us eating there too. With a variety of very inexpensive dishes and set meals to choose from, I can see why the cafeterias are popular even among salarymen working in the area.
