Wailana Coffee House (2006-11-01)
The first dinner for us was eaten in a diner across from Hilton. (I like diners!) Wailana Coffee House is open 24 hours and within easy access from our hotel. When we were outside the restaurant around 8 pm, I could see plenty of empty tables (as visable from the outside through the big glass windows) as opposed to the ones we wanted to go which had long lines of people waiting. So Wailana we went. The menu was quite extensive and KL went for the night's
special which was T-bone steak and I ordered the Habachi Sampler.
His meal came with a choice of Portugese soup or salad. He picked
soup. Mine also came with salad from the salad bar at which I got
just greens and fresh pineapples. When in Hawaii, must try their
pineapples. The ones I got were super sweet and ripe, just
delicious.
KL's soup had a not-too-watery and not-too-chunky texture, but it
reminded me of canned soup. It was just okay to him. Then
the steak arrived on a big platter with veggies and a baked potato
(also his choice). Mine was pretty big too which consisted of
grilled chicken breast pieces, shrimp kabob and grilled mahi mahi
served with veggies and fries. KL didn't like the steak saying it
was flavorless and regretted ordering steak at a non-steak
restaurant. He also tried a bit of my mahi mahi and said it
tasted fishy. This is from somebody who likes sashimi, so I who don't even like salmon and
most fish was surprised to NOT taste any fishiness in the mahi
mahi. I also enjoyed the tender chicken, but the shrimps were a
bit overcooked and rubbery. The fries which came with my meal
could've been more crispy and they must have fried them in a vat of
butter, thus making the potato sticks heavy and too buttery-tasting for
me. Drenching them in ketchup kinda rectified the problem.
My food certainly wasn't "Wow, excellent!"-worthy, but I didn't
dislike it either. KL on the other hand had a "I don't have time to
eat food this bad" feeling after his meal. Luckily there
was delicious ice cream after dinner to save the day.
