Kamadoka Restaurant (2004-05-07)
We found a quaint little restaurant called Kamadoka in
Shimokitazawa (

). It is just around the corner from the station's
north exit near the four-story electronics shop. The restaurant
serves Japanese style cuisine specialising in kamameshi which is an
old-fashioned way of steaming rice in a pot with a thick wooden
lid. A variety of meat, seafood or vegetables are also steamed
together with the rice. There is a three-minutes hourglass on
every table so diners can use it to time themselves before opening the
lid after the rice is brought to the table. There are booths with
doors, counter seats and regular tables throughout the
restaurant. The interior is decorated with bamboo, long scrolls
and old wooden furniture, a reminder of Zen serenity and harmony.
Oddly enough old American songs from the eighties played in the
background. But I like classic songs and soft music, so I am all
for it.
We did not order the kamameshi because we were too hungry to wait
fifteen minutes for the rice and the three minutes after it arrives at
the table. So KL had the raw tuna on rice set
that came with soup, salad and a side dish while I ordered the grilled
chicken set which included soup, salad and almond tofu dessert.
It was the best grilled chicken I ever had although I didn't like the
grilled skin much. I gave my dessert to KL since he likes almond
tofu and he said that's the best one he had, and for someone who
doesn't comment much on food to make that statement is saying a
lot. We plan to go back, and for us to travel all the way there
just for a meal is really saying a lot about that restaurant.
