Our Last Dinner In Hong Kong (2006-02-01)
Our last meal in Hong Kong was to be in a Brazilian BBQ restaurant, a request made by KL's 9-year-old niece. KL's sister said a minister who was a friend of KL's late father wanted to meet us and asked KL if it's OK to invite him and his wife too. We'd never met the couple and didn't know why they'd want to see us, but KL said sure, why not.The minister and his wife didn't want to go to the BBQ place and
picked another restaurant for us. It's a high-end restaurant in
New World Center which specializes in shark's fin cuisine.
Although the couple didn't know we were staying at a hotel in the same
complex, the location enabled easy access for us.
The manager wrote up an impromptu menu for our table soon after the
guests were seated. One look at the list of dishes on our menu,
we immediately exchanged the braised shark's fin as the first course
for ginseng soup. KL and I are against the slaughtering of sharks
to harvest their fins. It is inhumane and cruel, and we will not
be a part in this barbaric shark-killing trade. Since KL was the
one paying
for the meal, he could call all the shots. Good thing the
restaurant isn't just about serving shark's fins, their other dishes
which we had were delicious.
I particularly loved the steamed groupers, their meat was tender,
moist and not fishy at all. The deep-fried chicken was the best
KL and I ever ate. The manager told us it had won second place in
a culinary contest among outstanding restaurants in Hong Kong. No
wonder it was so good. The skin was paper thin and very crispy,
the meat was succulent and juicy and the chicken was seasoned with
exactly the right amount of spices.
The restaurant is expensive, much more so than the BBQ place.
However, the quality of food was superb, service was excellent and the
place was bright and clean.
But personally, I think it is entirely inappropriate and
presumptuous, not to mention rude, to pick a pricey restaurant to meet
someone for the first time and knowing it is the other party who is
footing the bill. It is a social blunder greedy or artless people
often make.
