Food in Hong Kong (2004-05-21)
One thing that brings us back to Hong Kong over and over again (except this trip when the primary reason was to see KL's mom) is food. Since I grew up in this city, I have the acquired taste for some local delicacies which may not appeal to foreign visitors such as pigeons and fish balls. One thing I always eat while traveling in Hong Kong is wonton noodles. Ho Ho in Sha Tin Mall to me serves the best wontons. Unfortunately we didn't have time to eat there on this trip though we managed to have them at another noodle shop.Another old favorite of mine is Gai Dan Tsai or egg balls.
They are egg-shaped pancakes with a crispy edge and just barely
sweetened. We tried them in several places but those from Tsim
Sha Tsui East was absolutely the best. I could eat tons of them.
Loon So Ton or Dragon Beard Candy is also delicious. The
little stand inside the underground walkway of Teddy Bear Kingdom in
Tsim Sha Tsui sells some very good ones. Each candy is handmade
from syrup pulled to gossamer fineness forming a cocoon for a stuffing
of finely chopped roasted peanuts, sesame seeds, coconut and a touch of
sugar. They are the best candies I've eaten. If you happen
to go to Hong Kong, try them yourself, you'll be hooked like me.
